Artificial sperm

June 27th, 2007 @ 12:49 PM in Society & Media

“…recently a team of scientists announced they had made artificial sperm from human bone marrow…” — [full article]

If women are to create artificial sperm using their own bone marrow, wouldn’t they be essentially cloning themselves? I mean, the sperm and the egg would contain the same DNA since they are both created by the same person… right? If that’d be the case, wouldn’t it cause mental illnesses like the old royal European families who married within their blood ties? And what happens to natural selection? Scary…

Cloning is not the same as in-breeding.
It’s an “exact” copy of what you are, hence, if you are from a healthy origin, so will your clone be.
But it’s just as disgusting, though.
I have a penis and I’ll fight to the end to use it!

So, they’d be coping themselves… how arrogant. I bet it’d be possible to make some “tweaks” — plastic surgery on the genetic level.

Yes, but they’ll never get it exactly right. Environment takes its toll. As in single-cell twins. Mood and talents don’t have to be the same either.
But it’s still pretty disgusting.. in another perspective, a life-saving twin isn’t such a bad thing. So-called donor babies. You can make them or make them, if you know what I mean, so I really don’t think it’s that wrong.

But did the article say that they were going to use _their own_ bone marrow to “make sperm”?

Yup, it said it’d be possible.
