Reconsidering EntreCard
February 1st, 2008 @ 5:26 PM in Life Stuffs, Web StuffsI spend one to two hours a day dropping my card on other sites to earn points so that I can advertise mine. Although I don’t do that everyday, it takes a lot of time and efforts which seem to be ineffective. Sure, I did get quite a lot of traffic and comments at first, but I don’t think any of them became regular visitors. Most of them just drop their cards and head over to the next one without even glancing at the contents. Someone even created a system that people can use to drop their cards without visiting those actual sites. So what’s the point? It’s the same thing as spammers wasting my bandwidth.
I had no life, but it’s getting worse because of it. Also, some of them use questionable images as their cards as Siggy complained about. Most importantly, I don’t think that time spent is proportional to the amount of traffic I receive anymore. So I’m thinking about getting rid of it as I have with ScratchBack. For now, though, I’ll just leave it to receive cards only.

Sometimes, you get to run into blogs that capture your interest and I admit that I’ve run into quite a few EC blogs that I have ended up subscribing to. Sure, overall, it’s not a great system since you have so many card droppers, but that’s what happens when we sign up for programs like these, right? We get a larger audience, but should only expect a very limited few to stay.

I still like entrecard, because I discover great blogs that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

I keep thinking that I’ll try it but I haven’t taken the time to create one yet. Many people do believe it to be a waste of time, though. There’s probably more efficient ways to find great blogs to subscribe to.

Whatever the case may be, I must admit that it’s very useful for new blogs to get some exposure without too much difficulty. However, I believe the best method is networking via comments and interactions.

Back in the day I used the “clicks for hits” scheme to increase traffic. I gave it up as soon as I realized that was why everybody else was doing it too. Everybody just clicked around to increase their traffic.
It’s like: Do I really want this kind of visitors? Do I need ‘em?
No, I don’t. I want sociable and active reading visitors.
My own content search engines do my hit-collecting.

I do need more traffic, though. Any idea???

yeah, i agree with you in the sense that some people only go to your site to drop cards but not really read the entries. sad sad reality. but i just take it as a challenge to post good entries/articles that droppers will find interesting and spend their time to really read. maybe along the way, you’ll gain more regular, more interactive, more sociable visitors.

nice blog, btw.

But this is a personal blog with no focus, so “good articles” are rare. Sites like mine are hard to promote.
Thanks!

You don’t need “good articles” in order to promote your site; I just think you need something that can catch others’ eyes. A good way to keep up the traffic is to be active in the forums and when people drop, drop back. Also go site hopping for a little while. You may run across something that looks relatively interesting.

I’m not good with graphics, and I’m practically color-blind.
As for traffic, I’m leaving comments whenever/wherever possible, so we’ll see. When I started blogging some 5 years ago, I went hunting for new blogs at sites like weblogs.com. I wasn’t working then of course.
