Question: Threaded Comments

March 7th, 2008 @ 12:55 PM in Etcetera

I’m considering to install a threaded comments extension on blog, but I’m not sure how useful it will be since I don’t receive that many comments. This can be blamed on my gender actually. In my observation, blogs owned by women receive far more comments, and it’s also different among age groups as well as their marital status. Well, that’s for another post. Anyway, please take a vote…

Well it depends on your replying style. If you only read your replies once a while, then adding an author comment highlight is better for you. But if you like a continuous conversation to each comment, then threaded comments would be a better choice! :)

OK what are threaded comments? And don’t make me feel dumb….

hmm I’m not sure what advantage they would have? What are your pros and cons for it? I don’t think I would like them… because they’re usually bulky and gawdy… but that could just be the ones I’ve seen..? My vote is no. Sawee

Ivy and Regina, thanks for your feedbacks! I’ll believe this poll opened until next week.

Connie, take a look at Ivy’s site for an example as she has threaded comments implemented. Basically, in threaded comments, your reply to others’ comments appear right below them instead of appearing in a linear order.

@Michael: From the way you reply to this post, I think author comment highlight is best for you.

@fragileheart: It’s not always bulky, you don’t have to make it indented so it won’t be so horrible looking.

@connie: This is what a threaded comment looks like:

Actually, Ivy, I commented that way only because it’s not threaded.

I think threaded comments tend to look a bit messy if there’s a lot of commenting back and forth. so I prefer linear myself.

Nothing against you Ivy, but I like the look of linear comments. You do a good job of replying to comments right on your blog Michael.

@Connie: But threaded comments provokes more conversation. So I vote function over beauty. :P

it depends though…for my case, i find threaded comments don’t really provokes more conversation, coz most of the time, people would’nt bother to click on the ‘respond to this comment’ button, some just prefer to use the comment box below n reply immediately. quick, easy, n less messy-looking? Well, it may work differently in other people’s cases.

the decision lies in ur hands. lol
