What Do You Work For?

July 3rd, 2008 @ 3:11 PM in Life Stuffs, Society & Media

Personally, I’d have loved to work as a database administrator / programmer in a business / government environment. After all, I’ve an BBA. However, I’ve been out of school for far too long. I’d go for an MBA, but I’m not doing so well financially… gotta make a living now, and the school here doesn’t provide the same services for students with disabilities as University of Hawaii.

I chose satisfaction. My latest blog post answers why. I’m too lazy to type it all over again. Hahaha. Sorry been away for soo long!

I was almost hired by accident, as I was tied up very close to a project on IDPs in Darfur and my term as a conscientious objector was coming to an end.

Then my colleagues have begun to recognize me as irreplaceable, and I feel a responsibility towards easing the day of the scientists with strategic IT decisions, and of course the fun of participating in cutting edge “texas rodeo style” projects where I get to buy the latest and greatest to play with:)

I’ve become something of a tinkerer and I like trying out new stuff. My next project is trying to persuade the management to let me build a beowulf super computer for statistical calculation.
Apart from that I’m redoing our websites, implementing database systems for external access to our datasets (for a free and better world) and doing a lot of tinkering in software as well as hardware.

So ‘responsibility’ should be one of the options.
Being a student, however, the paycheck is very nice too. But to be honest I have turned down better paid jobs to keep doing what I do. With flexible hours, paid phone and internet access at home, and now an office on my own it’s hard to find another job to replace it with. The only thing that would make me change workplace is the salary, which is too low, given that I don’t have any relevant formal education in my area..

Michelle » I think it’d fall under “paycheck” as you’re working for money.

Really I am self employed in a partnership so I take draws, not a paycheck per say - and I never get to spend my draws either because I have five kids. I work for other(s)- thus the choice other. lol :0)
