My Unborn Child
Your first cry in this world
As you slither out from the birth cannel--
Oh, what a heavenly sight it would be--
And the first spank on your buttock by the reality
Would be both music and sorrow to my ears.
Your constant cries and needs at night
Would surely wake your mother and me,
And we will attend to your every need
With our eyes half closed and still asleep,
But your soothing smile will make it all right.
Your first crawl to that shiny pearl necklace--
You take after your mother, I see--
And you sit, and make a serious face
As you explore the beads by beads
With the hands so tiny and pure.
Your first steps with your arms stretched
Out to me, babbling "Da-da"--
You waddle and yet continue towards me--
Be careful of that object and do not rush,
For you have all the time in the world.
Your first day of school, and I must say,
How scared I am as you are to let you go:
To let you love and hate;
To let you feel pain and sorrow;
To let you be spanked by the reality again.
But always remember this one thing:
My heart and soul will always be there
By your side and in your every heartbeat
To help you ease the pain and sorrow;
To help you to write to your unborn child.
